Guernsey is a very special place for lovers of flowers and gardens. Packed into this Channel Island's easily accessible 25 square miles, there is just about every floral attraction that you could ask for. Wildflower cliff walks delight as much as horticultural shows, country lanes and cottage gardens alike are adorned with daffodils, primroses and violets. Historic formal gardens compete with bluebell woods and natural orchid fields. Commercial growers supply Britain with superb cut flowers. Overall the Island is a microcosm of the world of flowers. This website is brought to you in conjunction with the VisitGuernsey and the Floral Guernsey Council. GARDENS & ATTRACTIONS Once part of a private estate, the award winning, restored Victorian Candie Gardens offer the best view across St Peter Port harbour, along with a rare example of a late 19th century public flower garden. They are home to the oldest known heated glass-houses in the British Isles, which date back to the late eighteenth century. Camellias and magnolias often grow to be huge in Guernsey, not least in the public gardens of Saumarez Park. Its exotic species were originally planted by a Guernsey diplomat who had served as the British Ambassador to Japan. A nature trail links the park with nearby Cobo Bay. Not to be confused with the Park, the sub-tropical woodland garden and art-park at Sausmarez Manor is well worth a visit. A wide range of sculptures is displayed amongst a multitude of exotic plants, beside the small lake. Other historic gardens shed light on the past. Restored by TV gardener Peter Thoday as one of four fascinating period gardens in Castle Cornet, General Lambertís Garden is tinged with sadness. Lambert was a favourite of Cromwell, but paid for it with imprisonment by Charles II. The Gardens at Victor Hugo's Exile Home have recently been restored and visitors can see the oak tree that Hugo planted. Hugo predicted that Europe would be united by the time the tree reached maturity. Visits to Hauteville House and Gardens can be arranged throughout the summer season. Many island attractions incorporate award-winning gardens. Bruce Russell & Son, Gold and Silversmith, boasts a large, colourful, floral garden, with water features and flowers in every corner and won gold in The Herb Garden at Auberge du Val Hotel is home to some wonderful displays of herbs, flowers and trees. The garden is set in a picturesque valley with the historical church of St Saviours. La Seigneurie Gardens on the Island of Sark are now recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society and has free access for members at some periods of the year. The Island won Silver Gilt in the 2005 Britain in Bloom competition and is well worth a visit for nature and flower lovers. Herm Island is a tranquil island just 20 minutes away from Guernsey by ferry. Gold winner in the 2002 Britain in Bloom Competition a visit to Herm should not be missed. |
